  • If using frozen blueberries, thaw them before adding to the saucepan.
  • If using orange juice instead of water, use freshly squeezed for best flavor.

  • Substitute honey for granulated sugar. This substitution will provide a sweeter and more flavorful sauce, while also adding a richer, more complex taste.
  • Substitute lime juice for lemon juice. This substitution will add an extra hint of citrus flavor, which will complement the blueberry flavor perfectly.

Cranberry Sauce Replace the blueberries with 2 cups fresh cranberries, and replace the orange juice with cranberry juice. Increase the sugar to 3/4 cup. Omit the lemon juice and zest, and add 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.

Classic Buttermilk Pancakes: Classic buttermilk pancakes are the perfect vehicle for this sweet and tangy blueberry sauce. The fluffy pancakes are a great contrast to the tartness of the blueberries, making for a delicious breakfast.

Bacon-Wrapped Sausage: Bacon-wrapped sausage is a delicious and savory accompaniment to the classic buttermilk pancakes and blueberry sauce. The salty, smoky flavor of the bacon complements the sweetness of the blueberries, creating a perfect balance of flavors. Plus, the combination of bacon and sausage is sure to satisfy any appetite.
