"This pita sandwich comes from Nova Scotia. I shortened the cooking time upon contacting the reviewer. I kind of wondered about that time."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Heat the oven to 350°Fahrenheit.

Step 2

With your hands, mix the salt, pepper, onion powder, and the 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder with the ground beef.

Step 3

Place the beef mixture on a baking sheet, forming it into a meatloaf shape.

Step 4

Bake the meatloaf for 45 minutes, flipping it over halfway through cooking.

Step 5

In the meantime, make the Donair sauce. Get out a medium bowl and mix the evaporated milk, sugar, the 2 teaspoons garlic powder, and the vinegar. Mix everything well until the sauce gets thick.

Step 6

When the meatloaf is done cooking, remove it from the oven. Let it rest for about 15 minutes. Do not turn the oven off yet.

Step 7

Place the 2 pieces of pita bread in the oven to warm it.

Step 8

Heat the olive oil on medium high in a medium sized pan.

Step 9

Slice the meatloaf thinly and fry the pieces on each side.

Step 10

On each pita, place some seared meatloaf and top them with diced tomato and diced onion. Add the desired amount of Donair sauce before wrapping up the pita.

This didn’t quite work for us, the meat was burnt to a crisp so I think it needs a far lower cooking time, maybe thirty minutes. I will be trying it again
