Heat oven to 350.
Mix butter, sugar, vanilla and chocolate.
Work in flour and salt until dough holds together (if dough is dry, mix in 1 to 2 tablespoons light cream).
Mold by the tablespoonfuls around date, nut, cherry or chocolate pieces.
Place cookies 1-inch apart on ungreased baking sheet.
Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until set but not browned.
To make either icing, combine all ingredients and mix till smooth.
Decorate cookies by dipping tops of cookies in icing of choice and sprinkle with colored sugar, candies, coconut, etc.
