Step by Step Method
Step 1
Prepare 9 x 13 inch glass baking dish with kittencal's pan release or nonstick spray.
Step 2
Peel, core and slice apples (medium-sized slices, roughly 1 inch x 2 inches: too small pieces turn to mush; too large take a much longer time to cook). Drizzle with lemon juice as you go to keep apples from turning brown. Place 1/2 the apples in the baking dish.
Step 3
Combine oats, flour, nuts, salt, spices in large bowl.
Step 4
Slowly melt butter and honey on stovetop in a small pot. When melted, pour over dry ingredients, mix well. Spread half of this mixture onto apples in baking dish.
Step 5
Cover with the remaining apples, and then spread the rest of the crumble on top. Pour orange juice over crumble, try to distribute evenly. Add a little extra water (< 1/4 cup).
Step 6
Bake at 375 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes, uncovered. Check around the 30 min mark, add a little more water if it's looking too dry. If it's browning on top too quickly with the apples still not tender, cover loosely with aluminum foil for the last part of the cooking time. Bake until apples are fork tender.
Step 7
These are great warm or cold. Also, you can reheat single servings quickly in the microwave - just add a little water, cover loosely, stir at least once during microwave reheat.
