"I was looking for Strom Thurmond grandma's biscuits. couldn't find them, but ncmysteryshopper had one that was probably close. You can drop these in soup to make fluffy dumplings. Can use for strawberry shortcakes, just add more sugar (1/4 cup). Can use 5 tablespoons cold lard instead of butter."

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 500° F.

Step 2

In a bowl, sift the flour with the baking powder, sugar, baking soda and salt.

Step 3

Work the butter or lard in until the mixture resembles coarse meal.

Step 4

Add the buttermilk and stir until the dough forms a ball.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and fold it over onto itself 10 times.

Step 6

Pat the dough out to an 8-inch square.

Step 7

Using a 2 1/2-inch round cutter, stamp out 12 biscuits

Step 8

Now some folks use a sharp tin can to make bigger biscuits.

Step 9

Re-roll the scraps and stamp out more biscuits.

Step 10

Arrange the biscuits on a pam sprayed or greased baking sheet (closer for softer biscuits apart for crispier biscuits) and bake in the center of the oven for 8 minutes, or until golden. Serve hot.

Wonderful biscuits! I wondered about the oven temp but used the temp as written and biscuits came out perfect! I used a coffee cup to cut out biscuits and made 8 biscuits. Perfect! Thanks for sharing!
