Step by Step Method

Step 1

Sprinkle yeast on lukewarm water in mixing bowl; stir to dissolve. Add sugar, salt and stir to dissolve; add flour and knead dough until smooth and elastic.

Step 2

Let rise at least 1/2 hour.

Step 3

While dough is rising, prepare baking soda water bath with 2 cups warm water and 2 Tbsp baking soda (Be certain to stir often).

Step 4

After dough has risen, pinch off bits of dough and roll into a long rope (about 1/2 inch or less thick) then shape.

Step 5

Dip pretzel in soda solution and place on a well greased baking sheet.

Step 6

Allow pretzels to rise again.

Step 7

Bake in 450 degrees F oven for about 10 minutes or until golden.

Step 8

Brush with melted butter then immediately sprinkle coarse salt.

Step 9

Enjoy the pretzels warm.

I like the pretzels at the mall and always grab one when I see them. I saw this and decided it was about time I tried making them. They are easy to make and other than needing a little practice twisting them the right way they were awesome! I love dipping mine in mustard. Such a great snack!
