"A few veggies, ground beef and seasonings and you'll have a homemade sloppy joe that will beat any canned hands down, I love this Joe recipe and even taste better the following day. FOR Pizza Sloppy Joes: Substitute homemade pizza sauce, or a jar of your favorite commercial brand for the tomato sauce and stir in 3 ounces of chopped pepperoni or turkey pepperoni. Spoon meat mixture on bottom buns and place about 1 tablespoon of shredded Mozzarella on each bun. place under the broiler to melt cheese and serve immediately."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

In a large skillet, cook the diced bacon until almost crisp; remove to a bowl, leave fat in the skillet.

Step 2

To skillet add in onion, bell pepper & celery, cook until softened but not brown. Add the ground beef and garlic along with the cooked bacon, and cook until ground beef is browned, breaking the meat up with a potato masher. Drain off oil if necessary.

Step 3

Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, tomato sauce, and ketchup. Simmer for about 15 minutes or until mixture begins to thicken. Add salt and pepper; taste and adjust seasonings as desired.

Step 4

Brush the bun bottoms with the melted butter and in a separate skillet or on a stove top grill, toast the buns.

Step 5

Spoon the beef mixture over bun and top with remaining top half of bun.
