Step by Step Method
Step 1
Cook cut bacon in a large pot over medium heat. Remove and add the onions and carrots and celery to grease.
Step 2
Season lightly with salt, pepper and paprika.
Step 3
Cook until translucent.
Step 4
Add garlic.
Step 5
Cook until veggies soften, about 2-4 minutes.
Step 6
Add water, peas, ham bone, and bay leaf to vegetables.
Step 7
Bring to boil and skim foam from top.
Step 8
Add chopped ham and rutabaga.
Step 9
Return to boil, then reduce heat to simmer.
Step 10
Let simmer for 1 hour.
Step 11
Remove ham bone and let cool about 5 minutes or until able to handle.
Step 12
Remove bay leaf.
Step 13
Pull any remaining meat from bone and add back to pot.
Step 14
Add bacon.
Step 15
Season to taste.
