Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 4 ounces bacon, cut into pieces (4 slices)
  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 3 celery stalks, chopped
  • 3 carrots, chopped
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 pound green split peas, dried
  • 1 meaty ham bone (8 ounces)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 8 ounces ham, chopped (1 cup)
  • 1 pound rutabaga, peeled & cut in 1/2″ pieces
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

How to Make

  • Step 1: Cook cut bacon in a large pot over medium heat. Remove and add the onions and carrots and celery to grease.

  • Step 2: Season lightly with salt, pepper and paprika.

  • Step 3: Cook until translucent.

  • Step 4: Add garlic.

  • Step 5: Cook until veggies soften, about 2-4 minutes.

  • Step 6: Add water, peas, ham bone, and bay leaf to vegetables.

  • Step 7: Bring to boil and skim foam from top.

  • Step 8: Add chopped ham and rutabaga.

  • Step 9: Return to boil, then reduce heat to simmer.

  • Step 10: Let simmer for 1 hour.

  • Step 11: Remove ham bone and let cool about 5 minutes or until able to handle.

  • Step 12: Remove bay leaf.

  • Step 13: Pull any remaining meat from bone and add back to pot.

  • Step 14: Add bacon.

  • Step 15: Season to taste.
