Step 1: Cook cut bacon in a large pot over medium heat. Remove and add the onions and carrots and celery to grease.
Step 2: Season lightly with salt, pepper and paprika.
Step 3: Cook until translucent.
Step 4: Add garlic.
Step 5: Cook until veggies soften, about 2-4 minutes.
Step 6: Add water, peas, ham bone, and bay leaf to vegetables.
Step 7: Bring to boil and skim foam from top.
Step 8: Add chopped ham and rutabaga.
Step 9: Return to boil, then reduce heat to simmer.
Step 10: Let simmer for 1 hour.
Step 11: Remove ham bone and let cool about 5 minutes or until able to handle.
Step 12: Remove bay leaf.
Step 13: Pull any remaining meat from bone and add back to pot.
Step 14: Add bacon.
Step 15: Season to taste.
