"This is the pie I make for my birthday. It's that good! Use my mom's pie crust recipe or, if you're a beginner, my sister Lauren's, both under my recipes. Prep time doesn't include making and baking pie shell. Adapted from staceyelee at fooddotcom. #recipe14628"

Step by Step Method
Step 1
Combine all ingredients except vanilla and cook on low heat until very thick. (I microwave it in a very large bowl, stirring every few minutes.)
Step 2
Remove from heat and let sit a minute or two. Then stir in vanilla and pour into pie shell.
Step 3
Add meringue, if using, and bake per meringue instructions.
Step 4
Otherwise, cool completely, then top with homemade whipped cream.
