"This is a traditional Canadian dessert. There are many versions of this recipe, this is one I have been making for ages. It is a no bake version. You can easily turn this into a mint Nanaimo by adding mint extract and green food coloring to the center layer, or you can turn it into a orange Nanaimo by adding orange extract and orange food coloring. There are many possible variations, so go ahead and make your own variation if you like. "

Step by Step Method
Step 1
Grease a 9-inch square cake pan.
Step 2
In a sauce pan combine 1/2 butter, white sugar, cocoa, 1 egg and vanilla.
Step 3
Cook over medium heat stirring constantly, until smooth and slightly thickened.
Step 4
Stir in the graham crumbs, coconut and walnuts and press into prepared pan.
Step 5
Cream 1/4 cup of the butter and gradually beat in powdered sugar and 1 egg. (This is where you can add different flavouring and food coloring if you like).
Step 6
Spread over crumb mixture and chill for about 15 minutes.
Step 7
Melt the chocolate and 1 tablespoon butter together in a double broiler or in a microwave, being careful not to burn.
Step 8
Spread on top.
Step 9
Chill until set.
Step 10
Cut into squares with a sharp knife.
