Step by Step Method

FOR THE DRY RUB

Step 1

Remove the thin white membrane off of the bone-side of the ribs. Mix together the brown sugar, dry mustard, cayenne, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper in a small bowl.

Step 2

Massage the rub into the ribs, and let sit for 1 hour, or up to overnight.

Step 3

If cooking on the grill, place the ribs meat-side down next to medium-hot coals that are about 225 degrees F.

Step 4

The indirect heat will cook them slower, making them tender.

Step 5

Allow to cook for 1 hour.

Step 6

Turn ribs every half hour, and baste with the Kansas City Barbeque Sauce.

Step 7

Cook until the ribs are tender, about 3-4 hours.

Step 8

If Cooking Indoors: Place in a roasting pan with a rack.

Step 9

Slather the ribs with the Kansas City Barbeque Sauce, and tent a piece of aluminum foil over them.

Step 10

In a preheated 350 degrees F oven, place the ribs, basting with the sauce every 30 minutes, and removing the foil for the last 30 minutes, and cooking until fork tender, about 2 1/2-3 hours.

FOR THE KANSAS CITY BARBECUE SAUCE

Step 11

In a small sauce pot on medium-high heat, heat the oil and add the onion, cooking until translucent.

Step 12

Add the remaining ingredients in a large bowl, and mix together.

Step 13

Add to sauce pan, and let simmer for 30-45 minutes.

Step 14

Use to baste the pork spare ribs.

A little spicy and a little sweet. What a great combo that makes. These ribs are delicious and finger licking good, so pass the napkins please! Coleslaw, baked beans, a good potato salad and cornbread is all you need with these ribs!

I bought a new smoker and was looking for rubs and sauces to try. This one turned out to be perfect on my ribs. I smoked them The flavor was awesome! I used oak wood this time but will experiment with others. One heck of a good recipe! My heat was about 200-225 degrees, so it was about the same time as the recipe said using the grill. I am going to made them again using pork tenderloin and pork chops. They should be good too!

We have never had Kansas BBQ and found this absolutely wonderful! I was concerned about the amount of heat as I as putting the rub and sauce together, but it mellowed out to be perfect for us! I have lots of rub/sauce leftover and plan on another feed really soon. Thanks Linda for another one of your keepers. Made for Billboard Recipe tag.

These ribs are fantastic Linda!! One of the best rib recipes I have tried. I let the rub sit on the ribs for 24 hours and the flavour permeated the meat perfectly. This will be made again soon! Made these again today (March 10th 2018) in the oven and we loved them!!!
