Step 1

In 1st saucepan mix the oatmeal, milk salt and maple syrup

Step 2

Heat on low stir occasionally

Step 3

Cook until thickened

Step 4

Watch that it doesnt overflow

Step 5

In another saucepan

Step 6

Mix water, pear ,spices and orange zest

Step 7

Simmer until pear is soft

Step 8

In microwave heat the topping until warm about 30 seconds and butter melts

Step 9

Put oatmeal in bowl

Step 10

Put the pears on top

Step 11

And dollop on toppings

OH YUM YUM!! Loved this version of oatmeal. My favorite oatmeal is steel cut and was so happy with the results. The addition of the the pear and maple toppings over it all makes the flavors come alive. So GOOD and so COMFORTING. Thanks so much, Dee, for sharing this absolutely delicious oatmeal. I made a simplified version of this yummy breakfast. My pear was very ripe and very soft, so did not heat it. I had no 5-spice nor orange. I skipped the butter but served it with half & half b/c I made the oatmeal with water, not milk. Despite my shortcuts, this was delicious and hit the spot!

We had these for breakfast and they made a couple truckloads of food. I made two servings. I used some Bob's Red Mill. Wow this was good.
