"I believe these originated in North Carolina although I may be wrong. Cooking time given is only for one 'Pup" only, cooking time will depend on the size of each 'Pup'. I advise making them in a few batches and not over crowding."

Step by Step Method
Step 1
Combine the corn meal, flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
Step 2
Separately mix the egg and buttermilk.
Step 3
Combine the two to make a thick batter.
Step 4
Put the batter into a large pastry tube or sealable freezer bag. If using the latter, use a scissors to cut off a corner so you can squeeze out the batter.
Step 5
Heat oil in deep skillet or deep fryer to 350 degrees.
Step 6
Squeeze out 2-inch lengths of batter into the oil. The hush puppies should be done a few at a time so the oil temperature doesn't lower and they don't touch as they cook. Total cooking time per 'pup is no more than 2 minutes.Drain on paper towels and serve immediately.
