"It's so easy to and inexpensive to make homemade Horchata! I usually make a diet version of this, and I double it to make a gallon. I've also thought of putting a little honey in it, but haven't tried it yet. This tastes so much better than the 'fountain' version. Kids and adults all love it. Oh yeah, and if you didn't know...don't pronounce the "H" or Spanish speakers will laugh at you. "

Step by Step Method

Step 1

In a blender, blend rice and water in batches until the rice is chopped up, and the water is white. Pour rice and water into a 2 quart container and let sit 4 hours to overnight. Shake or stir it every so often if you're able to.

Step 2

Strain the rice/water mix through a fine sieve, cheesecloth or clean pantyhose. Pour strained water into a 2 quart pitcher. Discard rice or cook for another use.

Step 3

Stir in remaining ingredients. *I've thought of heating some water, honey and cinnamon together before stirring it in but haven't tried it yet.

Step 4

Serve over ice. It's best chilled before serving for the cinnamon to blend in and infuse it. Stir or shake before each serving. Enjoy!

Coconut Horchata Replace the evaporated milk with the same amount of coconut milk and add 1/4 cup of shredded coconut. Heat the coconut milk and shredded coconut together before stirring it in with the other ingredients.

Vanilla Horchata Replace the evaporated milk with the same amount of vanilla almond milk and add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Heat the almond milk and vanilla extract together before stirring it in with the other ingredients.

Mexican Street Corn: Mexican Street Corn is the perfect accompaniment to Horchata! This savory and slightly spicy dish is a great contrast to the sweet and creamy Horchata. The combination of flavors is a surefire hit for any party!

What a great recipe. It tastes like rice pudding but a drink. Made as directed leaving the rice water mixture settle overnight. This will be a regular beverage here now, yummy!! Made for the Healthy Recipe Tag game.

I really had no idea what to expect from this recipe as I had never even heard of a Horchata. I choose it because it was intriguing. I shook it all up and poured it over crushed ice just before taking the photo. It is quite good and if you love cinnamon, you will love this beverage. Made for Billboard tag.
