Step by Step Method
Step 1
Cook the spaghetti: bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to the package directions until al dente.
Step 2
Drain well and set aside; saving 1/2 cup pasta water.
Step 3
Sauté: while the pasta cooks, heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat.
Step 4
Add the chopped onion and season lightly.
Step 5
Cook for 3–5 minutes, until tender.
Step 6
Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Cook until browned, breaking it up into fine pieces with a spoon.
Step 7
Drain any excess fat.
Step 8
Add chili powder and heat for a minute.
Step 9
Stir in the Heinz chili sauce, tomato sauce and garlic powder into the skillet with the beef.
Step 10
Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
Step 11
Add pasta water and let it cook for 30 minutes, to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
Step 12
Can add spaghetti here if you wish, or serve separate.
Step 13
Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Step 14
To serve: place a portion of cooked drained spaghetti on each plate.
Step 15
Ladle the chili beef sauce over the top and generously sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese.
