Step 1: Cook the spaghetti: bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to the package directions until al dente.
Step 2: Drain well and set aside; saving 1/2 cup pasta water.
Step 3: Sauté: while the pasta cooks, heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat.
Step 4: Add the chopped onion and season lightly.
Step 5: Cook for 3–5 minutes, until tender.
Step 6: Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Cook until browned, breaking it up into fine pieces with a spoon.
Step 7: Drain any excess fat.
Step 8: Add chili powder and heat for a minute.
Step 9: Stir in the Heinz chili sauce, tomato sauce and garlic powder into the skillet with the beef.
Step 10: Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
Step 11: Add pasta water and let it cook for 30 minutes, to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
Step 12: Can add spaghetti here if you wish, or serve separate.
Step 13: Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Step 14: To serve: place a portion of cooked drained spaghetti on each plate.
Step 15: Ladle the chili beef sauce over the top and generously sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese.
