"This family favorite came from my mother, Constance Wagner. Word has it that it can't be made successfully without the lard. However, lard has been found to be an artery-clogger, and so maybe someone can come up with a way to do this recipe without it."

Step 1

Mix together the butter and the lard.

Step 2

Cream shortening and sugar.

Step 3

Add egg and molasses.

Step 4

Sift dry ingredients and add to first mixture.

Step 5

Add hot water and beat smooth. Batter is soft but makes a fine cake.

Step 6

Bake in large shallow greased pan, 9"x13"x2", for about 35 minutes at 325-350' F.
