Step 1: Mix together the butter and the lard.
Step 2: Cream shortening and sugar.
Step 3: Add egg and molasses.
Step 4: Sift dry ingredients and add to first mixture.
Step 5: Add hot water and beat smooth. Batter is soft but makes a fine cake.
Step 6: Bake in large shallow greased pan, 9"x13"x2", for about 35 minutes at 325-350' F.
