Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • ¼ cup butter (no substitutions)
  • ¼ cup lard
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup dark molasses (blackstrap molasses works best)
  • 1 cup hot water

How to Make

  • Step 1: Mix together the butter and the lard.

  • Step 2: Cream shortening and sugar.

  • Step 3: Add egg and molasses.

  • Step 4: Sift dry ingredients and add to first mixture.

  • Step 5: Add hot water and beat smooth. Batter is soft but makes a fine cake.

  • Step 6: Bake in large shallow greased pan, 9"x13"x2", for about 35 minutes at 325-350' F.
