Creamed Chipped Beef (a.k.a. S.O.S.)
"This recipe is something similar to what my Dad used to eat when he was in the Merchant Marines. As a kid I couldn't stand it but,now it reminds me of my Dad. :)And yes,the chipped beef in a jar is super salty,but the method that I use pretty much gets rid of a lot of the salt. Now there is salt in the recipe,but this way you can adjust the salt level to whatever you like.The prep time includes the method I use to get rid of the salt.I prefer this over toast,but you can serve it over whatever you like. Step by Step Method
Step 1
Separate chipped beef and soak in a small bowl of water for 15 minutes,drain off water and continue with recipe.
Step 2
In a medium size skillet over medium heat,add oil and heat until hot but not smoking.
Step 3
Add onions,and cook until slightly softened.
Step 4
Add flour and cook until flour taste is gone.
Step 5
Pour in milk a little at a time and stir until desired thickness is reached.
Step 6
Chop beef into pieces and add to gravy.
Step 7
Taste and add desired amount of salt and pepper,then serve over toast or whatever you like.
