Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan forced.
Grease and line a 26cm x 16cm (base measurement) slice pan with baking paper, extending paper at long sides for handles.
Using an electric mixer, beat egg and caster sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy.
Add oil, beat until well combined and then fold in plain and self-raising flours until combined.
Spread over base of prepared pan, level surface and bake for 20 minutes or until lightly coloured.
Meanwhile, melt butter in a saucepan over low heat and add brown sugar and golden syrup, cook and stir for 5 minutes or until sugar dissolves.
Increase heat, simmer stirring for 10 minutes or until mixture is thick and then add macadamias and mix well.
Spread caramel mixture evenly over cooked slice base and bake for 10 minutes or until golden.
Cool completely in pan (slice will firm up) and then cut into 12 pieces to serve.
