Step 1: Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan forced.
Step 2: Grease and line a 26cm x 16cm (base measurement) slice pan with baking paper, extending paper at long sides for handles.
Step 3: Using an electric mixer, beat egg and caster sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy.
Step 4: Add oil, beat until well combined and then fold in plain and self-raising flours until combined.
Step 5: Spread over base of prepared pan, level surface and bake for 20 minutes or until lightly coloured.
Step 6: Meanwhile, melt butter in a saucepan over low heat and add brown sugar and golden syrup, cook and stir for 5 minutes or until sugar dissolves.
Step 7: Increase heat, simmer stirring for 10 minutes or until mixture is thick and then add macadamias and mix well.
Step 8: Spread caramel mixture evenly over cooked slice base and bake for 10 minutes or until golden.
Step 9: Cool completely in pan (slice will firm up) and then cut into 12 pieces to serve.
