"I haven't had these in years, but it was a staple at Thanksgiving dinners when I was a kid. This recipe is for a large crowd, but could easily be cut down for a regular family meal. Never buy candied sweet potatoes in a can again...this is so much better."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Bake potatoes in a 400 degree oven for 45 minutes, turning them over after 30 minutes. The potatoes should be taken out of the oven before they are fully cooked.

Step 2

While the potatoes are baking, heat brown sugar and water in a small saucepan, stirring constantly until it boils for 3 minutes. Add butter and stir until melted.

Step 3

Remove the baked potatoes from the oven and cool until you can peel potatoes and slice in half lengthwise. Place them in a baking pan in a single layer.

Step 4

Pour syrup over potatoes.

Step 5

Bake for 35 minutes in 325 degree oven, turning potatoes often in the syrup.

Excellent potatoes Karenstl! I cut the recipe down to suit my family size and also added a bit of salt and pepper to the brown sugar sauce. I wound up baking it longer for the second round in order for them to cook through. I found that it needed a little extra sauce, so I made another batch and spooned it over the potatoes for the last 4-5 minutes. These potatoes are so enjoyable and I will be adding this recipe to my Holiday table. I know my extended family would love them! Thank you Karenstl for sharing such an easy and swell tasting recipe!
