"Uncle Bill's recipes are always the best! Adapted from William Anatooskin on fooddotcom, he's not really my uncle, in fact I've never met him. But that's his moniker over there, and his recipes can always be relied on."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Rinse peas well in cold water and put in stockpot along with ham bone and water. Bring to a boil, remove from heat, cover and let sit for 1 hour. Meanwhile, dice vegetables.

Step 2

Return to a boil, add remaining ingredients, cover and reduce heat to low, cooking for 1 - 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Step 3

Remove ham bone and cut off any remaining ham and dice, along with leftover ham. Add to pot.

Step 4

Remove bay leaf and discard, taste and adjust seasonings. Cook a few more minutes so ham is heated through.

Step 5

Puree in blender, being careful to not overfill blender. You don't have to do this step, but it makes a lovely presentation.

So tasty! Thanks for sharing this! Love how easy this split pea ham soup was to make. Also love having leftovers for the freezer.

We loved this soup...although...I think if I have a craving for split pea soup I might just go to the local deli to get a cup...this makes a lot and takes a bit of time to make...I did puree half of the soup in a blender...we have lots of leftovers...made for "alphabet tag game"...

Classic easy pea soup. I did change a few things; but, not the basic taste. I did add a leek from my garden (just more onions flavor), a pinch of red pepper flakes (because I do like a bit of heat); then, I pureed it smooth. But, i normally wouldn't puree it ... I would leave it as it - it is GOOD AS IS!!! I was taking it camping and in a thermos, so; I wanted smooth. Again, same flavors. I did add a splash of cream; but, not much. That is just something I like. I still added the ham; and, same basic flavor. A killer, basic pea soup recipe, with tons of flavor. Perfect to me!!! Can't get more classic good comfort food!

Pure comfort food on a blustery day. I didn't puree, as we like the vegies and meat chunky. Great with homemade light caraway rye bread.
