Step by Step Method
Step 1
Put the olive oil in a large pot and heat on medium-high. Put in the chopped onions and the red bell pepper. Cook everything for 5 to 6 minutes, or until the onions are translucent.
Step 2
Mix in the chopped garlic, chili powder, cumin, red pepper flakes and the salt. Add in the ground turkey and cook for 7 to 8 more minutes, stirring occasionally, until the turkey is no longer pink.
Step 3
Mix in the yams, canned black beans, crushed tomatoes, and water. Cook 15 to 20 minutes longer, until everything starts to thicken up. Salt and pepper to taste.
Step 4
Serve this with the orange zest, cilantro, and bacon if you choose to.
