Editorial Notes

The ingredient tips, suggestions, variations, facts, questions and answers below are not edits to the original author's recipe. They are not meant to imply any change would improve the recipe. • Make sure to use fresh eggs for the best flavor.
  • If possible, use freshly ground cardamom for a more intense flavor.

  • Substitute almond milk for regular milk - Almond milk is a great alternative for those who are lactose intolerant or vegan, and it provides a subtle nutty flavor that pairs well with cardamom.
  • Substitute coconut oil for butter - Coconut oil is a healthier alternative to butter, and it adds a hint of sweetness and tropical flavor that complements the cardamom.

Chocolate Chip Waffles Add 1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips to the batter before baking on the waffle iron.

Swedish Blueberry Compote - This sweet and tart compote is the perfect accompaniment to the spiced Cardamom Waffles. The blueberry compote is a classic Swedish recipe that adds a fruity flavor to the waffles and helps to balance out the spices.

Creamy Vanilla Custard: A creamy custard made with eggs, cream, and vanilla extract is a delicious accompaniment to the Swedish Blueberry Compote. The rich custard brings out the sweetness of the compote and adds a creamy texture to the Cardamom Waffles.

FAQ

Q: How do I know when the waffles are done?

A: The waffles are done when they are golden brown and crispy. You can also check to see if they are done by pressing lightly on the top of the waffle. If it springs back, it is done.

Q: How long should I cook the waffles for?

A: The cooking time will depend on your waffle maker, but typically it takes about 3-5 minutes for the waffles to be cooked through. You can also check the waffles periodically to make sure they don't get overcooked.

These have already become a favorite! Love, love the cardamom in it, and by instinct, doubled the cardamom, glad I did. It adds such a warming flavor. The texture was perfect and with syrup, so good! Thank you, Dee, for sharing. Made it for "Best of 2022" as recommended by Mikekey.

Very tasty. I love cardamom, but had never used it in waffles. I cut recipe in half for 2 waffles.
