Step by Step Method
Step 1
Using a 1 1/2-gallon heavy pot,

Melt bacon drippings.
Step 3
When hot, sauté onions and garlic cloves.
Step 4
Add ground beef and chili powder.
Step 5
Stir until meat is well browned.
Step 6
Add red wine (optional).
Step 7
Add salt, beef base( they called for 1 tablespoon ), tomatoes, ( they called for 4 cups ,chopped)bay leaf and sugar.
Step 8
Simmer chili meat, covered, for 20 minutes, stirring often.
Step 9
Add pinto beans to the meat.
Step 10
Simmer chili con carne for 1 hour, covered over low heat, stirring gently from time to time.
