Step by Step Method
Step 1
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water, stirring in the 1/2 teaspoon sugar.
Step 2
Let stand 45 minutes (5 minutes for active dry yeast).
Step 3
Cream shortening with 1/2 cup sugar
Step 4
Add egg, salt, cooled milk and yeast.
Step 5
Stir in flour a little at a time until dough is stiff enough to knead.
Step 6
Knead for 10 - 15 minutes until elastic. Place in greased bowl and let rise until double.
Step 7
Knead and let rise until double again.
Step 8
Divide and shape dough in 2 or 3 greased pans.
Step 9
Cover with clean, damp warm towel.
Step 10
When doubled again, bake in preheated 375 degrees F oven for 35-40 minutes.
