"I hate paying the high prices for crappy vanilla extract at the grocery store, this is easy and a lot cheaper to make yourself. I must say the although I have said three months it really does get stronger and stronger so even more than three months is better. This makes excellent gifts to friends who like to bake. "

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Split vanilla beans down side with a sharp knife. Place vodka in a clean glass jar. Add beans to vodka. Seal lid and place in dark, cool place away from light for 3 months (even more time is better).

Step 2

Give it a shake once a week or so. In 3 months you will have vanilla extract that you can use in recipes.

Step 3

The vanilla extract will stay good for years. You can keep adding more vodka and vanilla beans to the bottle as it gets low to keep your supply going.

Made this a while back to give for holiday gifts I still have the beans soaking. I think this is worth making and a lot less cheaper than vanilla sold in the stores. I can't wait to give this out to family and friends, thanks so much.

I made the vanilla and now I am just waiting for it to age for 3 months. I plan to give it in gift baskets for Christmas. I didn't use it in anything, and since it has to age I can't taste it to say it is good, but from going by the smell alone, I am giving it five stars! I can't wait to put this in my gift baskets and see their faces when I give them to my family this Christmas! Thank you for posting this so I could make it CookingAdventurer! Linda
