Step by Step Method

Step 1

Combine the first 4 ingredients.

Step 2

Cut in the shortening and reserve ¼ of the mixture for the topping.

Step 3

Add egg to remaining mix and stir in molasses.

Step 4

Dissolve soda and salt in buttermilk and add to molasses mix.

Step 5

Pour into greased 8"x8" pan and put reserved mix evenly on top.

Step 6

Bake at 350'F. about 40-50 minutes.

Step 7

Serve warm.
