Ingredients

The ingredients are:
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 3 tablespoons dark molasses
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

How to Make

  • Step 1: Combine the first 4 ingredients.

  • Step 2: Cut in the shortening and reserve ¼ of the mixture for the topping.

  • Step 3: Add egg to remaining mix and stir in molasses.

  • Step 4: Dissolve soda and salt in buttermilk and add to molasses mix.

  • Step 5: Pour into greased 8"x8" pan and put reserved mix evenly on top.

  • Step 6: Bake at 350'F. about 40-50 minutes.

  • Step 7: Serve warm.
