Step by Step Method

Step 1

To make the crumb mixture: place all the crumb ingredients (flour - butter) in a bowl and then using a pastry blender cut the butter and the other ingredients until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 2

To make the filling: In a saucepan on medium heat add the canned figs and their liquid and cut the canned figs into small pieces and then add the dried figs and the next 5 ingredients (-cloves) and cook for 5-10 minutes or until thickened and bubbly. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.

Step 3

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 4

Put half of the crumb mixture into a greased and floured 8 x 8x2 inch baking pan and press the crumbs into the pan.

Step 5

Pour fig filling over the crumb mixture.

Step 6

Crumble the remaining half of the crumb mixture over the fig filling, spreading evenly over entire pan.

Step 7

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until browned.

Step 8

Remove to a cooling rack before cutting into bars.
