"This is an easy recipe my Grandfather found on the back of a can years ago. He made it because it used up several things he had on hand. He became known for it in the family. It's not good for you and looks horrible but is nice to have at least once a year. It's better the next day. On first bite you might think it's strange but then as you eat it, it becomes addictive. Don't rate it until it's second day! I just made a healthy version of this that turned out just as good so am going to post the options. This is great with fresh bread dipped in it. YUM! **My Grandmother just told me that this was a recipe SHE found and adapted over the years and was only known as my Grandpa's recipe because he always said "Make me MY soup!". And when my Aunts and Uncles want the recipe they ask for Dad's soup recipe.**"

Step by Step Method

Step 1

In large pot melt margarine/butter and saute bag of onions in it. When onions are almost done add garlic, if using.

Step 2

If using stewed tomatoes, dice them and add to pot.

Step 3

Add rest of ingredients to pot. Stir.

Step 4

Cook real slow over low heat for 3-4 hours. *I've made this in a crockpot on high for 2-3 hours.

Step 5

This is great served with crusty bread, dip the bread in it! It also tastes even better the next day.

Yum. I followed your suggestion to wait for second day. I cut recipe in half. Like Bea said, it uses things I usually have in the pantry. I used while baby clams. I am thinking a can of sliced white potatoes would be a nice addition. I did in my small crockpot.

Okay, this is a good thick soup but it is better after it is cooled and reheated. I had it right after I made it and it was okay but when i reheated it for my lunch the next day I was more happy with it. I used the italian seasoned diced tomatoes and the canned clams with the juice. I used fresh onions, I have not ever seen frozen onions here and I used 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme as reccomeneded by this chef. I would make this again so that is good.

This is a really spectacular recipe. It is delicious, easy to make, inexpensive and the flavors meld together wonderfully. The kids thoroughly enjoyed it. My eldest daughter actually stole the last bowl from me! It says to simmer it for 3 hours, but I couldn't help myself and I had a bowl hourly! It tasted wonderful each time I sampled it! Even my kids ate some prematurely and still enjoyed it! The spices I added were thyme, a bit of dill, some turmeric (which is why it probably looks so yellow in my photo) and some paprika. I used baby clams this time, but I'll be using adult clams next time. Yum, yum! Perfect and filling for cold, rainy days!

A tasty soup that you can make with what you already have in your pantry. Nice flavours. Will make this again, thanks for sharing. Made for the Billboard Recipe Tag game.
