Step by Step Method

Step 1

In a bowl add the eggs and then whisk in the milk, sugar and cardamom.

Step 2

Soak slices of bread into the egg mixture for just a few minutes on each side (this depends on how thick your bread is -- you want the mixture to soak into the bread)

Step 3

In a skillet over medium heat add the butter and oil and when hot add 2 slices of bread; cook for a few minutes until golden and then flip over to cook other side. Remove from pan and dust with confectioners' sugar. Repeat with remaining bread and egg mixture.

Step 4

Should be served immediately topped with your favorite topping -- in our house it is maple syrup and berries if available.

  • For the best flavor, use freshly ground cardamom.
  • It is best to use thick slices of bread for this recipe.

  • Substitute almond milk for the regular milk for a dairy-free option. This substitution will make the recipe vegan-friendly and provide a nutty flavor to the toast.
  • Substitute maple syrup for the sugar for a healthier option. This substitution will reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe and add a unique flavor to the toast.

Cinnamon Variation Replace the cardamom with 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and add 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg to the egg mixture. Top with your favorite topping and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Roasted Asparagus with Parmesan Cheese - Roasted asparagus is a delicious side dish that pairs perfectly with the Cardamom Egg Toast. The nuttiness of the Parmesan cheese complements the cardamom flavor and adds a savory contrast to the sweetness of the toast. Plus, it is a healthy and easy dish to prepare!

: Baked Sweet Potato Fries with Garlic Aioli - Sweet potato fries are a great accompaniment to the Cardamom Egg Toast. The sweetness of the potatoes pairs nicely with the cardamom flavor, and the garlic aioli adds a creamy and savory element. Baked instead of fried, these sweet potato fries are a healthier and tasty alternative to traditional potato fries.

FAQ

Q: How long should the bread soak in the egg mixture?

A: It depends on the thickness of the bread. Generally, it should soak for a few minutes on each side.

Q: What type of bread is best for French toast?

A: Brioche, challah, or a thick-cut white bread are all good options for French toast. The thicker slices of bread will absorb more of the egg mixture.

You had me at cardamom. I love it and it sure made this dish. I have always added nutmeg to my french toast and don’t know why I never considered cardamom instead, but this is my new french toast recipe. I cut recipe in half for just me. I used thick cut bread.

Delish! I love cardamom and this French toast didn't disappoint (I did go a little heavy on the cardamom, though)! I originally thought it was too many eggs for the amount of bread, but I was wrong... this is perfect and the bread sopped it up. What I learned from this recipe is that using a mix of oil and butter makes for a much crispier french toast - I'll never use all butter again.
