"Comfort food that I grew up on and made for my family when the children were young -- it's one of the things they would always eat and stretches the food dollar too! This version is from Saveur (April 2007) and is similar to what I used to make and is open to subs based on what is on hand and what your family likes."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Heat the oil and butter in a large pot over medium high heat; add onion and green pepper and cook for 8-10 minutes or until onion is softened. Stir in ground beef and spices (garlic powder to red pepper flakes) and salt and pepper to taste if desired. Cook until beef is browned (5 minutes or so).

Step 2

Stir in next 4 ingredients (tomatoes - cinnamon) and bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium low and simmer until sauce has thickened (45-50 minutes).

Step 3

Meanwhile add the macaroni to a large pot of boiling water and cook until done (10 minutes). Drain and rinse with cold water.

Step 4

Stir macaroni into the sauce and cook about 10 more minutes or until done.

We weren't too crazy about the cinnamon and sugar addition. Just wasn't to our liking.
