What is the base of the Italian dessert affogato?

Icecream and espresso.

What ice cream is best for affogato?

Vanilla is the classic flavor.  Hazelnut and chocolate are popular alternatives.

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Make 4 shots of espresso.

Step 2

Place a scoop of ice cream in each bowl. Pour espresso over ice cream.

Step 3

Add Bailey's or Frangelico, if using.

Step 4

Serve immediately.

Step 5

Step 6

If you do not have an espresso maker, you can substitute 3 tablespoons strong brewed coffee, or add 1 tablespoon espresso powder to 1/2 cup boiling water.

Step 7

Either pour the espresso over the ice cream and serve immediately, or serve the espresso on the side and let your guests pour it on themselves.

This was delicious! I added a little Bailey's and a squirt of whipped cream, too!

I first had this a couple of years ago in an Italian restaurant and loved it. I used Amaretto for the liqueur and served with an almond biscotti. Will be making this again.
