"A different twist on buttermilk biscuits. The yeast makes for a lighter biscuit. This recipe came from the Missouri State Fair sometime in the late 1970s."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Dissolve yeast in warm water.

Step 2

In large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar.

Step 3

Cut shortening into dry ingredients until mixture resembles coarse meal.

Step 4

Add buttermilk and yeast mixture. Knead 3-5 minutes. Let dough rest 10 minutes.

Step 5

Roll 1/2" thick and cut into biscuits. Place on greased cookie sheet. Allow to rise 15 minutes.

Step 6

Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden.
