  • 1 1/4 ounce package yeast
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups buttermilk

How to Make

  • Step 1: Dissolve yeast in warm water.

  • Step 2: In large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar.

  • Step 3: Cut shortening into dry ingredients until mixture resembles coarse meal.

  • Step 4: Add buttermilk and yeast mixture. Knead 3-5 minutes. Let dough rest 10 minutes.

  • Step 5: Roll 1/2" thick and cut into biscuits. Place on greased cookie sheet. Allow to rise 15 minutes.

  • Step 6: Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden.
