"This works especially good on stainless steel cookware. When I switched to stainless steel cookware, I had several instances where I got food bonded to the bottom of a pan. One day my Mother was visiting and I was complaining about it. She said, "cream of tartar". I said, "huh"? She said it just popped into her head that my Great Grandmother DeeDee used to say to sprinkle cream of tartar in a hard to clean stainless steel pan, put some water in it, and boil it until the crud comes off. Guess what? It works every time! "

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Sprinkle the cream of tartar over the stuck on crud.

Step 2

Pour water over it. If the crud is really thick you may need more water so it can boil for while. If it's thin then you only need about an inch or two.

Step 3

Boil over medium heat until you see the crud start to flake off. If the crud is especially thick, you may see the entire layer float to the top.

Step 4

Once most of it has flaked off the rest will be easy to scrub off.

Step 5

Hope it works for you too!

Worked like a charm. Thanks for posting such a useful tip, Engrossed. I left olive oil heating on a burner for brief time and returned to find a gummy residue which just wouldn't let go of the surface of my almost new pan. Now it's new again -- and only 31.7 calories. =-)

My favourite pot had stains that I just couldn't remove so when I saw this I thought, what the heck, it can't hurt. Well I'm glad I tried it, my old favourite pot looks like new!!!
