Step by Step Method

Step 1

Preheat oven to 375° F.

Step 2

Grease an oven-safe Dutch oven (Or put on cookie sheet ).

Step 3

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and baking soda.

Step 4

Using a pastry cutter, add in the cold, cubed butter, and blend until pea-sized crumbs form.

Step 5

In another bowl whisk together the egg, orange juice and buttermilk.

Step 6

Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients.

Step 7

Stir until a sticky dough forms.

Step 8

Flour your hands then place the dough into the pan.

Step 9

Form a disc and cut a deep “X” across the top using a serrated knife.

Step 10

Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.

Step 11

Transfer to a cooling rack.

This certainly does make a wonderful bread for breakfast! Its texture is in-between cake and scone and it tastes great. I did up the zest, given that I was cutting up both oranges and tangelos for the family, so might as well use the zest. So good toasted, schmeared with butter….yummy! Thank you, Dee, for sharing.
