Step by Step Method

Step 1

Run the lime half over the rim of a glass and salt the rim.

Step 2

Squeeze the lime into a cocktail shaker, add the jalapeno slices and cilantro leaves. Muddle lightly. NOTE: I didn't muddle at all - I thought it would be too spicy. The way I made it had a kick but didn't burn your mouth.

Step 3

Add remaining ingredients, add ice and shake for 20 seconds until ice crystals form. Pour into the prepared glass and serve.

  • When selecting jalapenos, look for ones that are firm, unblemished and bright green in color.
  • For the tequila, use a good quality brand you would drink neat.

  • Substitute tequila with mezcal: Mezcal is a type of tequila with a smokier flavor, which can add a unique depth of flavor to the drink. The benefit of this substitution is that it can add an extra layer of complexity to the flavor profile of the drink.
  • Substitute Cointreau with Grand Marnier: Grand Marnier is an orange-flavored liqueur with a higher proof than Cointreau, adding a more intense orange flavor to the drink. The benefit of this substitution is that it can give the drink a more intense orange flavor.

Tequila Sunrise Replace the Cointreau with orange juice and the jalapeno slices and cilantro leaves with a splash of grenadine. Shake the ingredients with ice and strain into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with an orange slice.

Mango Sunrise Replace the tequila with mango-flavored vodka, the Cointreau with mango nectar, and the jalapeno slices and cilantro leaves with a splash of pineapple juice. Shake the ingredients with ice and strain into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with a mango slice.

Grilled Fajitas: Grilled fajitas pair perfectly with the spicy and tangy flavors of the Ay, Caramba! drink. The sweetness of the peppers and the smokiness of the grilled meat will help to balance out the intense flavors in the drink. Plus, it's easy to make and a great way to feed a crowd!

Spanish Rice: Spanish rice is a flavorful and easy side dish that pairs well with the Ay, Caramba! drink. The savory rice is cooked with onions, garlic, tomatoes, and spices, and it will help to mellow out the spiciness of the drink. Plus, it's a great way to add some extra nutrition to your meal!
