Step by Step Method
Step 1
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Step 2
In a large bowl whisk flour and sugar together. Using a pastry cutter or two knives work butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse meal.
Step 3
In a small bowl or measuring cup whisk together the egg and milk. Add one cup of the milk mixture to the flour mixture and mix together with your hands until a soft dough forms; adding 1-2 tablespoons of milk mixture if dough seems dry. Reserve remaining milk mixture.
Step 4
Transfer dough to a floured board. Pat dough out to a 1 inch thickness and using a 3 inch round cookie cutter (or a coffee cup) cut out scones. Put scones on a lightly floured cookie sheet. Brush tops with reserved milk mixture.
Step 5
Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.
