Budget Stretchers: Use it Or Lose it 2012 - Join the fun!

Post by HeatherFeather » Sun Jan 01, 2012 11:41 am

Ok - we alll have food in our pantry, freezer, or lurking in our fridge that we really know we need to use up or it will just become a gross science experiment or go stale as drywall before we get around to eating it.

It is a new year - let's start thing's off with a bang by taking inventory of some of these items clogging our pantries and either use then or lose them! This will be a month long event - starting today. Here is how it works:

The First Ever Recipezaaz Budgets Stretchers Use it or Lose it Event!

Go through your home and find at least 15 items in your home that are food/beverage items that you want to use or lose by the end of this month. These can be anything edible at all and can include items for pets as well as humans.

Things to look for:
 gourmet food items you got as gifts or bought as a splurge item
 ingredients you rarely use but picked up because the sale sucked you in
 items you bought because you were hungry when you went shopping and then never ate
 items you used once or twice for one recipe and then forgot about
 items you overpaid for and don't really want to eat, but have to because you spent so much on them
 seasonal foods you accumulated
 leftovers or ready meals you have stashed that are going to expire or will get freezer burn/mold if you don't hurry up and eat them soon!
 items you bought in bulk that you do use, but have way WAY too much of to store
 duplicate items you picked up because all that other stuff listed above was clogging your pantry/freezer/fridge and you bought more - sometimes you have done this several times
 items you bought because it sounded good online, in a magazine, on tv, or the packaging rocked.. but then you tasted a little and either you or someone else in your household didn't like it so it sat there.. and sat there
 items you really want to be eating more of for health reasons but you keep forgetting to eat
 ingredients you are afraid to use because they are foreign to you or have instructions in another language

You get the idea!

1. Make a reply to this thread listing your 15 items - don't be afraid of the number - this amounts to approximately 3 items per week. You have a whole month to try to use up these items and you can choose anything at all that you already have in your home. The goal here is to try to use everything at least once during the month.

2. Check out everyone's lists and offer suggestions on how to use those food items in new ways - suggesting recipes or posting new recipes you have created using up the foods on your list or on anyone else's lists. Posting photos is fine too! (but not required).

3. Report back whenever you use something on your list and what you did with it. You just have to eat or use some of the ingredient for it to count. No one is asking you to wait until your entire bottle of garam masala you bought the one time you watched Aarti Party is all used up

Note: You can be creative with the food - feeding it to animals or letting your kids craft with the food or turning the food into cleaning items/beauty treatments counts too! It has to start out as food, but as long as it gets used, it counts

At the end of the month, take a look at anything that was on your list that you never touched even once. Consider donating it, passing it on to a friend or family member, or tossing it.

You can join any time you like during the month and you can opt out if you need to for any reason. Hopefully we will all help each other save some money by not wasting our already purchased food and learn some great new recipes in the process! :D

Ohh I like this idea!

Well I found that most of the things I have on this list are probably unusual but I did quite a lot of impulse buying during the last 2 months and some of them I kinda regret cause I can't seem to get those things moving. A couple things have been gifted to me and I can't seem to get around to trying it!

1. Canadian bacon - I usually don't buy this stuff but I got curious to try it and I used it in a couple recipes before with good results but the last recipe oh my gosh, so salty! I didn't even add salt to that recipe. I kinda got turned off from using it now. Ideas please? The recipe I used it in was a pinwheel recipe.

2. Frozen cinnamon rolls - impulse buy

3. Snack pudding cups - another impulse buy which I didn't like the taste of, help! Don't want to throw it out.

4. canned crab meat - never used this stuff, saw it on sale, got curious and bought two cans (doesn't expire till 2013 though :? )

5. Orzo pasta. I bought this to try a recipe and never found the need to use it since then.

6. Couscous Pasta - also bought for a recipe and haven't used it since.

7. Wonton wrappers - bought it to make some chicken wontons and have quite a bit in the freezer looking at me for the longest time.

8. 4oz of cream cheese - my grandmother left it after she went back home from vacation. I have it in the freezer and can't seem to get motivated to use it in anything - ideas?

9. Cinnabon cereal - I just had to try it, paid quite a bit for it, ate half of it and can't get motivated to eat the other half. Luckily I have a bag sealer so it remains freshly sealed for now. I been thinking if I can incorporate it into recipes. But I'm not a fan of the chocolate/cinnamon combo. Ideas?

10. Homemade vanilla ice cream - I tried to incorporate a drink mix into an ice cream recipe to mask the taste and use it up and instead the ice cream itself has a slight hint of the taste from it so I don't enjoy it much when I eat it. What can I do not to throw out this ice cream? I am eating it so slowly and it bugs me that it is in the freezer :( . Learnt a lesson to never do that again though!

11. Protein powder - yes you read right. When I was lifting weights regularly I bought some but when I mix it into my hot chocolate it has this different mouth feel although the powder itself is tasteless. I don't like the weird mouth-feel so it's kinda been sitting there. Can I mix this into baked goods without altering the end results maybe?

12. Cherry Pie Filling - something I never bought before but wanted to use it for a black forest recipe for Christmas which did not come into fruition. So I have it in the fridge and wondering what other recipes can I make using it.

13. Frozen individual portions of baked ziti - not close to freezer burn or expiry cause I only made it last week but I should give myself a time limit to keep that thing frozen in there before I forget about it. So would hope to eat all portions before the end of the month.

14. Red onions - 2 of them! I never used them before and bought it just for a recipe which I never ended up making. I definitely don't need 2 for the recipe so I am open to all ideas to use it.

15. White Quinoa and quinoa flour - gifted to me by my mum cause I talked to her about it and how I was thinking of trying it so she sent some with my grandma. I haven't gotten around to using it but I know it is a good thing to use! Recipe ideas much welcomed.

Rox...I have a dessert recipe that uses cherry pie filling. (mine comes in a can, so I"m not sure if we're talking the same thing as you don't refrigerate it). Here it is:

http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/husban ... ry-dessert

and..here's an appy recipe using wonton wrappers:

http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/sausage-wontons

Both of these recipes are my own, so I can attest to both. :D :D

Ok here is my list:

1) Rice a Roni mixes - I have several of these I bought on a 10/$10 sale. I used to love it when I was a kid, but found I no longer like it nearly as much now. They also changed their formula - the "original" regular version has orzo in it instead of vermicelli, which for me was the whole appeal.

2) Pecans - I accidentally bought an extra huge bag of these over the holidays when I couldn't find the first bag.

3) Black walnuts - see #2 - same problem

4) White miso paste - I have half a tub left over that needs to get used up before it expires

5) Cranberry flavor Stove Top Stuffing mixes - I bought a few as emergency stuffing over the holidays, but didn't need to use them after all

6) Canned grapefruit - bought for a recipe I saw on tv, then completely forgot to make

7) Beef Tenderloin tips - I have several packs of these in my freezer from Omaha steaks that I need to use up before they expire

8) instant pudding mixes - I have way too many of these

9) a bottle of Taco Bell creamy jalapeno sauce - no idea why I bought this, but it has sat unopened for several months

10) Oatmeal - I have way too much

11) bottled marinades - I have so many different bottles - they always sound good in the store, but I usually make my own marinades so they sit there. Plus people gifted me some as well.

12) 1/2 a bottle of Maker's Mark bourbon - bought to make a cake, still have some left and I don't drink it, planned to use up in a Christmas cake, never happened

13) a box of fish fry mix - I almost never fry anything, but I bought this because a coupon I had for something I was already buying gave it to me free

14) apples - I have a whole basket of them needing to get eaten up

15) canned peas - I don't like them, I bought them for a recipe and never used them up (several cans)

The oatmeal I'd use to make home-made granola. I do this once monthly. (old fashioned oats, not quick although you can use either/or). I have a recipe posted here as well. :D :D

The apples...I'd make apple crisp. It's surprising how many apples it takes to make a crisp.

Coffee, thanks for the ideas. I have almost everything for the dessert recipe but only about 3-4 ingredients for the wonton recipe and not main ingredient on hand - sausage. But you gave me a great idea to use the wonton wrappers with things I already have in stock.

Heather, for the pecans I keep thinking something like turtle bars or cinnamon sugared pecans or pecan pie bars, mmm.

Your instant pudding mix gave me an idea - trifles! I may try that with my snack pudding cup. Layer some cake, pudding folded with whipped cream to lighten it up and then some plain whipped cream. Also, since yours is the powdered stuff I do remember seeing a chocolate chip cookie recipe which uses box pudding to keep it soft if I'm not mistaken.

So the Taco Bell sauce, use it for dipping chicken nuggets and fries. I imagine it's mayo like?

Gosh, send me the bourbon! haha just kidding. Seriously though I'm not a big drinker and I have had scotch and vodka and kirsch (all opened) sitting in my pantry for a few years. I only use them occasionally and alcohol does not spoil but only get better with age so I don't think you should worry about using it up. But if you feel like it I did see bourbon balls posted over the holidays and what luck, it calls for pecans too!

I also have a few apples to use up, the first thing I made was Coffee's dutch apple bars, really easy and delicious! Effort to make them and cleanup is very minimal too.

Roxanne --
Try the Canadian bacon in thin slices on a pizza with black olives and thin slivers of red onion in an Alfredo sauce instead of tomato/pepperoni or layer thin slices on a toasted English muffin and top with a poached egg and Hollandaise sauce. Or try this breakfast pizza: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/elli ... index.html. Another idea is to substitute it for the meats in Denise's favorite Italian Chopped Salad. http://www.food.com/recipe/italian-chop ... ells-29329

Try one of these for your cinnamon rolls: bread pudding or tiramisu. http://www.sisterschuberts.com/recipe/l ... amon-rolls
or try cutting the individual rolls in pieces, dip in melted butter, roll in sugar, and layer in a bundt pan to make monkey bread.

With some adjustments, you can rid yourself of the pudding cups and the cream cheese by cutting this one in half. It's not really sweet and is very good.

Heather --
Try some of your pudding in BigD's recipe for a cream puff cake. http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/kathys ... gar-free-0

Toast your pecans (a 350 oven for 15-20 minutes) and add them to your granola (see CoffeeB's suggestion). Wrap them tightly, squeezing out any air and freeze halves for up to 2 years and pieces up to 1 year. They can be defrosted and refrozen, I've heard. I just keep my pecans in the freezer and take out what I need for a recipe.

We've tried this with canned grapefruit, and it is almost as good as with fresh. It does call for red grapefruit though.

You can simply ship the Maker's Mark directly to me :D or try it in a version of Linda's Kahlua to create an entirely different drink.
http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/kahlua-my-way
Another idea is to use it in Bourbon Chicken Wings: http://southernfood.about.com/od/chicke ... 30419c.htm

I came back to edit this when I thought of the green pea guacamole dish. Most recipes call for frozen peas (defrosted), but here's one with canned peas. http://www.laaloosh.com/2009/02/05/weig ... le-recipe/
Of course they can always be added to a stew or pasta dish and there's always the older version of green pea salad (with cheese and mayo).

Heather...I go through so much in instant puddings, that I buy it in bulk. :o :o .
Rox is right about trifles....TDF. I have a great one over on >>>>>>>>>>>>>.com, if you care to give it a try. (don't want to post the link). It's a pumpkin one...delish!!!
But, have you ever tried this recipe ...make a regular 9x13 cake, cut it into cubes, mix pudding and coolwhip together, layer in a pretty trifle bowl... cake, pudding...cake, pudding. You can even incorporate some chopped butterfinger candy bars or any type of candy bar for a decadent dessert that sooooo easy .

Hmmm, I would really have to dig to find 15 items, I think. Other than a can of Spaghetti-O's that DS left here - blech, I don't wanna eat that! I'm not sure you can even doctor that stuff up! It will probably go in the hurricane kit. I mean, if you get hungry enough, I guess you'd eat it  I do also have a can of evaporated milk in there for emergencies. I might actually use that tonight in some sort of creamy chicken chili with some cornbread?? I don't really buy stuff that I won't use. Although, there is a bunch of candy and junk that we got in a gift basket, but I'm not eating that either

I am joining this group. I have more stuff in the freezer then you can shake a stick at.

I am going to put my ski gloves on to go through the freezer. Why I did not purchase a stand up freezer was very stupid!

I am going only cash for the next 30 days. Yesterday was simple as nothing was open. When I told Dh this was the plan & only for 30 days. He looked like a deer in the headlights.
