Me and gramps hunted. Venison, rabbit; duck, and pheasant. And of course, the lake; so, tons of fresh fish. Definitely good eats!

It's funny for me the difference in attitude toward food that doesn't come from the store based on background. When I was a kid, if we didn't grow it, shoot it, fish it, or trade services for it, we didn't eat it. There was zero money, and the only thing we bought from a store was milk (except that came from the dairy just up the road, not the grocery store). We did, however, have an ungodly huge garden, abundant wildlife nearby (there are few animals native to Michigan I haven't eaten), and friends who would give us chickens as long as we helped out on slaughtering day. They always had me pluck feathers because I hated even the tiniest part of shaft in my meat so they knew it would be clean.

What I particularly love now is how people pay ridiculous amounts of money for morels. We used to live in the woods in a tent for a month at a stretch, going out every day to find and pick them. Then we'd eat some, and dry the rest over screens (so the spores would re-seed the woods) to keep us the whole winter. Usually ended up with at least three bushels before they dried.

Morning!

Felix, we picked our own morels as well. Unbelievable how much they are. Unfortunately w/MI winters, gardening was summer; and living in the city we ate mostly grocery items.
However, weekends; and summers, we ate at our second home; where we had lots of items frozen from the garden, local meats, etc. So, it was a compromise.

But, it amazing how many people do NOT take advantage of local market, beef; and produce.
-------------------------------

Well, still doing my fast. 2 more days.

Well, I had my supplement drink yesterday am, then grapefruit juice. Water and lemon all day. Dinner was a cucumber berry drink; and a detox tea

Today, breakfast was grapefruit juice, tea, Water and lemon all day.
Dinner, a cucumber berry drink; IF starving. I am allowed to have a 1/4 miso broth, and 1/4 cup natural brown rice. But, I think I'll just have the juice drink.
Then, just 1 more day to go. It's important to get nutrients; but, we as a whole eat WAY TOO much food; and, foods that are not beneficial.

So far, so good; this is not for everyone - but, I always feel so much better.
------------------------------------------------

I hope your dinners are WAY more interesting than mine, lol. Anything other than water and juice will be better    :)

 The incongruity between me talking about being so poor we had to hunt, fish, and grow food to live and you talking about having a garden at your second home just struck me. Of course, there are a number of people who live in Southern states who seem to think we here in Michigan should just buy local produce year-round, too. As if it's an option for us. When I was a kid we canned and froze everything from the garden to get us through winter since we couldn't afford to buy vegetables or meat then, either. ;)

Anyway, dinner tonight. I'm doing #recipe3488 (served as boats as a main dish), along with more #recipe5778, some cottage cheese, and the finished product of the watermelon "ice cream" I finally got to making last night.

Felix, I pretty much meant that up north at our second home; we always tried to live off the land, garden, local produce, dairy, meats, poultry, etc; venison we caught, fish, etc. Since we were up there almost every weekend, holidays and all summer; we froze, canned, and processed everything for year round use.

Unfortunately in the major city (like Detroit) back when I grew up; fresh produce, gardens, etc were not readily available. And, NO local farms within 1 hr drive. So, during the week in the city; we had to rely on grocery store food.

Believe me, I know in the mid west and northern states; canning and freezing is basically the only way you can enjoy year round FRESH produce. Now-a-days; there are some alternatives, but $$. But, when I was young; that wasn't the norm. It is nice to see the options these days; I wish there were more that were affordable.

I hope you don't think I was trying to argue with you. Please don't take it that way. I really enjoyed all our canned goods, freezer stash and our whole cow or pig we got. It lasted forever ...
We lived on that. I remember many pulled pork dinners; brisket as well :D

I don't think you're arguing, I just think you don't get it. I'm talking about being so poor we had to live like that or starve. You're talking about having a garden at your second home and purchasing an entire cow for later use (which you paid someone to process). The two are so astronomically different it's like they're from different planets. ;)

Morning!
Hump Day already. Well, got home late from work; laid down and fell asleep. I forgot it was garbage day ... geeze. I guess a run to a dumpster is needed. So mad at myself.

Day 3 of my fast. LAST day!
Nutritional drink this am, along with grapefruit juice. Lemon water all day; a berry ginger drink for dinner.
I really feel good; and, it wasn't hard at all. Although, I am a bit hungry today

Ladies #1, #2, and #3: Open face Italian burgers, topped with sauteed onions and peppers, marinara and mozzarella - served on a toasted baguette; Italian green beans; caesar salad.
