"I never thought about making French toast with honey and this is the only way I make it now. Another thing I have found that there is no way that 3 eggs and 1 cup of milk is enough for 8 bread slices so I add another egg and 1/2 cup milk, I use homemade white bread that I make on my bread machine then leave it in the fridge for 3 days."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

In medium size mixing bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, eggs, honey, and salt. You may do this the night before. When ready to cook, pour custard mixture into a pie pan and set aside.

Step 2

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Dip bread into mixture, allow to soak for 30 seconds on each side, and then remove to a cooling rack that is sitting in a sheet pan, and allow to sit for 1 to 2 minutes.

Step 3

Over medium-low heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a 10-inch nonstick saute pan. Place 2 slices of bread at a time into the pan and cook until golden brown, approximately 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove from pan and place on rack in oven for 5 minutes. Repeat with all 8 slices. Serve immediately with maple syrup, whipped cream or fruit.

  • For the best flavor, use day-old or stale country loaf, brioche or challah bread for the French toast.
  • For a lighter version, use milk instead of half and half.

  • Substitute almond milk for half and half - Almond milk is a great alternative to dairy milk and provides a delicious nutty flavor to the French toast. It is also a healthier option as it is lower in fat and calories than dairy milk.
  • Substitute agave syrup for honey - Agave syrup is a vegan-friendly alternative to honey and is also lower in sugar. This substitution will make the French toast slightly less sweet and provide a more subtle flavor.

Cinnamon-Raisin French Toast Replace the honey with 1/4 cup of brown sugar and add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/2 cup of raisins to the custard mixture. Before cooking, sprinkle some of the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the slices of bread. Serve with maple syrup.

Orange-Maple Glazed Bacon - This sweet and savory dish is the perfect accompaniment to Alton Brown's French Toast. The combination of salty bacon with the sweetness of orange and maple syrup will provide a delicious balance to the French Toast.

Fruit Salad: A light and refreshing fruit salad is the perfect accompaniment to this sweet and savory dish. The bright and juicy flavors of the fruit will provide a delicious contrast to the salty bacon and sweet syrup. It's a healthy and delicious way to complete your meal!

I love French toast and the fact that this uses honey instead of sugar does give this recipe an edge over other French Toast recipes. Loved it!

I REALLY enjoyed this French Toast - the honey adds a subtle flavor that makes it special. I did not, however, follow the directions to use the oven but just fried the French Toast on a griddle.
