Starting your seeds yet?

Post by kberry » Wed Apr 03, 2013 12:13 pm

Hello!

Just wondered if anyone has started the germination process for your garden plants?
I started my a few days ago and they are started to push through the soil.

I planted my seeds in cardboard egg cartons.
After I was finished with that I poked a wooden stick in one of the "cones" that stick up.
I put the whole thing in a 2 gallon ziplock bag and zipped it close.
Keeps moisture in as well as heat. Keep those in the windows until it's time to remove from the bag. :)

I live in a condo so my garden space is extremely limited. Most all of my available space is taken up by perennials. I have a couple of small hydrangeas that were planted last autumn and I am excited to see how well they grow in their little spot.
Anything else I plant will have to go in planters on the patio. Since this place is like a bat cave anyway, and since I don't have a spot set up with grow lights, I will be going with starts from the nurseries, for whatever we do get for this year.
But I love hearing about starting seeds- I used to do that where I lived before and we grew more hot chiles than probably the whole town could use in a season. 8-)
If we move from here, I hope to have more garden space again. :D

That would be great for you.
Have you ever heard of a "Topsy Turvey"?
You can hang those up and grow veggies in those.

I have used topsy turvey. Worked great if you have plenty of sun. But water daily.

I use Earth Box for my tomatoes. They get about 6' tall. I get more tomatoes from 1 plant than most can eat, especially cherries or plums. They have ones on stands and smaller ones too. Great to plant, and you can't over water.

Right now I have herbs in my planters, lettuce on my wall hanging; red leaf, romaine, snap peas, chard, butter lettuce, 4 tomatoes, and 3 peppers. I also have 3 kale in the ground. It is hard in FL. Mine have been in for a month, I will harvest in June and July. Then nothing till Sept planting.

Yes, I have started some tomatoes and basil so far. Peppers are going to be next. Probably will get around to it this weekend.

This year I am planting a new vegetable.

"Asparagus Pea". Really different item!

From the picture it's really a cute looking veggie. I just happen to see them and thought they would be interesting to try.

I would also like to try ground cherries. See what those are like too.
I guess those are supposed to taste similar to pineapple.
Not supposed to eat them though till they fall off the plants.

My baby basil sprouted today! So cute! ;) Tomatoes not sprouted yet. But I am sure this week. They are in full sun, when we have sun. Planted in moisture controlled miracle grow potting soil. This was the first time I have bought it, I am happy with it.

My bok choy and baby lettuce really took off. I have cherries and plum already. My yellow and beefsteak are always later. I'm anxious to see the baby snap peas.

Thanks for posting this! I've been intrigued by Earth Boxes for a while now (as it gets harder and harder to get down to ground level) and was wondering if they were worth investing in. I've got room for 1 or 2 and I may just make the leap this year. :)

Here is a few pics Marion. This is before the maters were ripe, they grew another couple of feet. I have 2 tomatoes in each and 1 pepper in each. I grew yellow organic which were really good and I got a ton probably 50 or more. Cherries ... more than I could eat, plums same; and a beefsteak.

The peppers were a jalapeno and a cubanelle, which is a favorite.

In the other box is red leaf lettuce, zucchini, cabbage and kale.

The hanging shoe rack, yes, a show rack lined with burlap and dirt. Has a variety of red leaf, butter lettuce, and baby bok choy. This was my Fall Winter Crop. I had 2 other boxes, but these you can see how much they grow.

I have my spring season in now, tomatoes, peppers, 1 box of lettuce, and snap peas, and bok choy, romaine.

You literally plant your veggies; then water through the tube. Doesn't matter if it rains. Does need sun however for tomatoes to grow. You can't over water these.
