 Can't remember if I mentioned this one before but I just enjoyed one of my favorites today that I learned from my Mom...A Hot dog on a soft bun with some ketchup and cottage cheese. The whole tomato and cottage cheese thing again. YUMMMO! :D

One appetizer we always had at Xmas was the cream cheese with the jalapeno jelly.

Mom used to get these wonderful wheat crackers, then used a pastry bag and make a pretty little swirl of the cream cheese on the cracker with a little hole in the center for the jelly. Then she piped the jelly in the hole. They were so perfect looking and there was always a bit tray on the table.

I still keep the soft spread philly and jelly in the fridge for a quick snack. I figured that is better than ice cream or sweets.

Engrossed wrote:Wow, Heather you sure do have a lot of weird combos  Some I like too, but you also gave me some ideas for some new ones like the tuna and corn over a potato...is there anything else added? Love Liverwurst...but I grew up eating it on soft white bread with iceberg lettuce and either mayo or soft margarine spread on the bread. I crave it every once in awhile. :D
Tuna & Sweetcorn is a very common combo you find in most cafes and deli sections of grocery stores in England. It is tuna, corn, a very light amount of mayo (they use far less than most deli salads would have in the US), a tiny bit of salt and some pepper. Served over a crispy skinned baked potato as a meal. They rub the skin of the potato with oil, salt it well, bake it until tender inside and crisp outside.

There were little food stands that sold pretty much nothing but jacket potato varieties (what they call baked potatoes) - all kinds of toppings.

In a cafe, mine was usually served with a shredded carrot/raisin salad on the side.

My Dad doesn't make pretty swirls, but one of his favorite snacks was always a box of crackers with cream cheese and/or peanut butter with jelly.

Well I love peanutbutter and green onion sammies and I love all kinds of different veggies - Chayote, Jerusalem artichoke can't think of some others!
The thing is there isn't much that Ifind weird. How about a sponge cake coved in whipped cream, dotted with canned apricots and cut up to look like a platter of fried eggs.
If a recipe has a weird combination of ingredients I will like ly try it - but not if it has chicken feet in it!!!!!  :D :D

Wow KC, your Mom was a pro. I've never been to any party where someone took the trouble to pipe cream cheese onto crackers! Sounds beautiful. :D

Reminds me of old-fashioned parties...I bought an old gelatin book and want to try making some weird jello molds to bring to parties and shock everyone. :o

:o Bergy, now that peanut butter and green onion sammy does sound weird...although I can see it in a wrap with a few other things...Asian influence. ;) :D

I love trying new fruits and veggies too. One I don't like that my Filipina MIL uses alot is Bitter Melon...hate bitter anything. Love most Asian greens...Yu Choy is my current favorite. Filipinos have lots of yummy fruits though but most you can only get canned or jarred. I'm going to have to post a recipe for Halo Halo some day basically layered crushed ice with sweet beans and exotic fruits then sweetened condensed milk poured over (but I use sugar and cream), and topped with Ube (purple yam) ice cream. YUMMO! :D

Fried Egg cake super cute...Might be a way to celebrate Dr. Suess's Birthday...Green Eggs and Ham Cake! :D

If you like to try weird combos, just read through this thread...it's given me plenty of ideas and I've tried a few. :D
