Alternative Christmas Menu???

Post by Ninya » Mon Oct 31, 2011 6:38 am

Hows this for something different ?? I would not dare deprive Gobs of his Turkey but some of these dishes sound soooo good I must try them at another time. I just adore Ottolenghi, such a different approach to food, have both his books on my xmas wish list.

That does sound amazing! If you plan that meal for next year it leaves the rest of us with plenty of time to save up and fly over so we can join you for dinner. I'll bring wine and maple syrup.

Interesting menu - some of those dishes looked really yummy. I was a bit intimidated by the stuffed squid though (even though I do like squid).

I never make turkey for Christmas. I make Chicken Piccata with a either Lemon Pasta or Carrot Pilaf and Honey Wheat rolls for Christmas Eve (some years I have made pasta as a main instead, using a different sauce). Then on Christmas Day I usually serve a fruit salad with either Eggs Benedict or an overnight breakfast casserole, then for early dinner I make a ham with warm curried fruit on the side, scalloped potatoes, and other side veggies.

For my desserts I usually make either a Bundt Cake, cheesecake, or pie, along with homemade fruitcake and many cookies.

It all looks really good and all things I would like, but my family would not be happy if I served anything but our traditional Christmas menu.
They look forward to it every year. Deviating would cause such a stir!!!!
Is this what you are planning?

Gosh no Jelly, I would be lynched  But I did think there was some really nice ideas in there maybe for one day in the holidays. Love the sound of the walnut salsa. I am sooooo hoping that himself will listen to my many, many hints about the Ottolenghi books - have my doubts though LOL!!!

I enjoy making new and intresting foods and when Kevin eats them and seems to enjoy them...I let him know what he is eating!!!! :D
If it doesn't fly he will say..."You don't need to make that again!"
I like to try new things and when I lived in CA there was some really adventurous foods to try! Yum! And there were also things that even I balked at!!!!

Some of those recipes do look good Ninya, especially those lamb meatballs.

Like Jelly, my Craig (dh) would riot if I served him anything but the traditional Xmas grub and to be honest I'm partial to it myself. Although, I could do without Turkey as we have one every year at Thanksgiving and then another for Xmas, kinda gets a bit much 2 months in a row.
