Thank goodness someone has found a "fabulous" book to read. It has been a long time coming. I will go to the libray today & order it.

"Bonnie Jo Campbell has created an unforgettable heroine in sixteen-year-old. Margo Crane, a beauty whose unflinching gaze and uncanny ability with a rifle have not made her life any easier. After the violent death of her father, in which she is complicit, Margo takes to the Stark River in her boat, with only a few supplies and a biography of Annie Oakley, in search of her vanished mother. But the river, Margo's childhood paradise, is a dangerous place for a young woman traveling alone, and she must be strong to survive, using her knowledge of the natural world and her ability to look unsparingly into the hearts of those around her. Her river odyssey through rural Michigan becomes a defining journey, one that leads her beyond self-preservation and to the decision of what price she is willing to pay for her choices."

Rating on this book is 4 out of 5 with 891 reviews.

It is very unusual for me to re-read any book as there are always books that I am anxious to read for the first time. That said, my sister is starting this book and I wanted to read along so we could discuss it.
If you like history and mystery this one will stay with you for years.........

"The Devil in the White City is historical fiction that spans the years surrounding the building of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, also known as The World's Columbian Exposition, which was designed to commemorate the landing of Columbus in America. This nonlinear novel is divided into four parts with the first three parts of the novel primarily taking place in Chicago between the years 1890–1893. However, Part IV of the novel takes the reader to Philadelphia circa 1895. In The Devil in the White City, author Erik Larson uses extensive research to recreate the lives of two real men and to reinvent Chicago during the World's Columbian Exposition. In the process, he creates two separate, yet connected plot lines and attempts to fill in some of the gaps left by history. One plot line centers on Daniel Burnham, the architect who builds the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The other plot line focuses on character H.H. Holmes, the serial killer who exploits the fair to find his victims."

I LOVE this book and have found Larsen's other books to also be good, though Devil is the best in my opinion. Enjoy...again!

Welcome Cookie, always looking for another opinion on a book. Thank you for yours as I will be ordering this from the library.

Any books you would like to recommend? Or what are you reading at this point in time?

Last night I started "The Distant Hours by Kate Morton". I have already read her other two books "The Forgotten Garden and The House at Riverton". The story takes you back in time to 1941 during World War II. It is a mystery with a historical theme. I am enjoying the story very much.

I"ve tried to get into Jane Eayre. I loved the movie, but the book is a bit much for me. I went to the library and complained about the wording in the book and the librarian put me on hold for a different version. I can't grasp the type of english the author is using. Makes my head hurt.

Hi ~ new here (although some of us may have "seen" each other on f.c.)

Ninya, if you enjoyed the Dragon Tattoo books, have you read Child 44 (sorry, can't think of author)? It is not for the squeamish (but doesn't seem that you are :D) and I found the writing style to be similar to Larsson's (who unfortunately won't be writing any more books). Very strange book ~ but I don't want to give a thing away!
