Maybe his uncle lived in Texas? Or maybe this is/was more common than I realized? No, the farm was in downstate Illinois. He did say they were very sweet, like apples.

When I was between the ages of 6-12 I spent most of my summers on a small Southern Ohio farm in the Teays River Valley and we ate raw onions every night, at least 2-3 apiece. We just peeled them, cut them in half and salted the dickens out of them and crunched away. It would kill me now, especially all that salt.

We also munched on fresh scallions all the time.

When I got interested in girls, I had to drop the onion thing. :lol:
